Doubletree Arctic Club

The Doubletree Arctic Club is one of several historic hotels in downtown Seattle. Although it is now owned and operated by Doubletree, it looks nothing like their typical hotel.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened in 1916 as the Arctic Club, a fraternal men's club for businessmen with Gold Rush connections. The decor and styling inside is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century men's club with tall ceilings, large windows, and rich wood moldings.

It has been renovated several times over the years and much from the original Arctic Club has been rescued, restored, and reused. You'll see reminders of the history of the Arctic Club everywhere. The first thing you'll notice are the terra cotta walrus heads, 27 of them, adorning the outside of the building all the way around. The check-in desk in the lobby is surrounded by sepia photos of Arctic Club founders and members.

Be sure to see the historic Northern Lights Dome Room, a grand ballroom featuring Rococo gilding, original artistic frescos, and a huge stained glass dome.

In fact, just about everything at the Arctic Club is grandiose and opulent, and will make you feel very aristocratic!

What's Nearby

The Arctic Club is located near the south end of downtown. There is a Light Rail station just across the street which is a very convenient way to get to and from the airport. There's also a bus stop there and it's within the Ride Free Area. Seattle's historic Pioneer Square district, home of the Underground Tour, is only one block away.

The ferry terminal, Qwest Field, and Safeco Field are also within just a few blocks. If you're here for lots of sports events at the stadiums, this would be an excellent choice of hotels.

And you can still walk to Pike Place Market and Westlake Center (about 10 blocks) from here or take the bus or light rail if you don't want to walk.
